Recently, Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew announced that Harriet Tubman (1819 (or 1822) – 1913) will replace Andrew Jackson, the seventh President of the United States, on the $20 bill. The former slave and abolitionist is the first African-American, and the first woman in over a century, to be featured on the face of U.S. currency.

Tubman, who was selected by popular vote, faced fierce competition from powerful women like Rosa Parks and Eleanor Roosevelt. However, it was the African-American fighter for equality that appealed to the public the most. Born a slave in 1820 in Maryland, Tubman managed to escape while in her 20’s. She then dedicated her life to helping others achieve their freedom through the Underground Railroad, a system of safe houses and abolitionists.

While reading the news article about Harriet Tubman, I had a question: “What is the true freedom?

Some people say that they do not like to go to church because they do not want to be bound. They want to act whatever they want, which, they think, is the freedom. Is this the true freedom?

Jesus said, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32).” At this, the Jews answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.”

The wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23.) Those who act whatever they want without knowing they commit sin become slaves to sin and will die in the end. Can it said that freedom which does last for a short time is the true freedom?

Jesus let us know the way to be freed from sin and to have eternal freedom:

Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day…” (John 6:53-54)

Whoever eats Jesus’ flesh and drink His blood has eternal life. How can we eat and drink His flesh and blood. Jesus allowed us to eat and drink His body and blood through the Passover of the new covenant:

On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?” … While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this [Passover bread] is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This [Passover wine] is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. (Matthew 26:17; 26:26-28)

By keeping the Passover, we can eat and drink Jesus’ flesh and blood and have the forgiveness of sins. Jesus sacrificed Himself on the cross and established the Passover to free His people from sins. He declared the Passover as the new covenant:

And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer…” … In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you…” (Luke 22:15; 22:20)

Through the new covenant, we can have eternal life and be freed from sins — in other words, we will have the true freedom. It’s different from the freedom of moment many people seek. Jesus established the new covenant for the forgiveness of sins and even said, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you.” However, the new covenant was abolished by Satan during the Dark Ages. To bring salvation, Christ Ahnsahnghong restored the Passover of the new covenant according to the Bible.
