How grave was our sin which made us expelled from heaven to this earth? The Bible says that the wages of sin was death (Romans 6:23.) In other words, all human beings are sinners who committed grave sins equivalent to the death penalty.  “Death” written in the Bible refers to death of our souls as well as that of our bodies. Death of a body just means that the soul which was born in the flesh departs from the body in due time (2 Corinthians 5:8.) What we really need to fear is death of our souls after death of our bodies.

Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. (Matthew 10:28)

Since death of the soul comes after death of the body, it is called the second death, the lake of fire.

Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment (Hebrews 9:27)

… and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. (Revelation 20:13-14)

For those who think things based on the visible flesh life, it may be hard to understand the fact that good people and even children who do not know sin are sinners and deserve the punishment of death. Some might wonder why people must enter the lake of fire with small sin on this earth. It may seem that it’s too absurd if we must enter hell for sin on this earth.

However, death of our souls or the lake of fire is not determined only by sin on this earth. We had already committed grave sins in heaven before we were born on this earth. That is to say, the earth where we live is similar to a prison in which angels stay for a while, who are destined to receive the punishment of hell. It’s like a prison where death row prisoners stay temporarily until executions take place.

Though a death row prisoner acts in a virtuous manner and serves others  in the prison, he cannot escape the predefined punishment of death. It’s because he received the death penalty due to sin before he entered the prison, not due to sin in the prison. Likewise, we cannot escape the predefined punishment of hell eve if we live a good and virtuous life on this earth.

All human beings are destined to enter eternal hell if they cannot have the forgiveness of sins. Therefore, the appearance of Christ who has the authority to forgive us is really an ardent wish and a good news.

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned… For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:2-6)

According to this prophecy, Jesus Christ came to this earth to free us from our sins. And Jesus established the Passover of the New Covenant through His sacrifice on a cross in order to free us from our sins. Those who deny the Passover put themselves in the punishment of hell by rejecting the grace of the forgiveness of sins made by the sacrifice of Christ.

Note: Today, only the World Mission Society Church of God (WMSCOG) celebrates the Passover of the New Covenant according to the teachings of Christ Ahnsahnghong.
